SBA suspends thousands of borrowers for alleged $375M in pandemic-era loan fraud
On July 8, the SBA announced the suspension of 7,800 Wisconsin borrowers allegedly connected to $375 million in suspected fraudulent PPP loan and COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) activity. According to the agency, the action, taken in coordination with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, represented the latest step in its ongoing investigation into alleged abuse of taxpayer-funded pandemic relief programs intended to support small businesses and their workers. Suspended borrowers are barred from receiving future small business and disaster loans and are ineligible for other agency programs, including federal contracting under the 8(a) Business Development Program. As previously covered by InfoBytes, the SBA, in February, suspended more than 110,000 borrowers in California and, in June, suspended more than 27,000 Ohio borrowers for alleged PPP loan and COVID EIDL fraud (covered here).
