SBA suspends 27K+ Ohio borrowers over alleged $1.1B pandemic-era loan fraud

June 11, 2026

On June 4, the SBA announced that it suspended 27,486 Ohio borrowers allegedly connected to approximately $1.1 billion in suspected fraudulent PPP and COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan activity, in consultation with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud. The SBA also highlighted indictments that DOJ announced against four individuals alleged to have engaged in more than $1.4 million in alleged pandemic-era fraud. The SBA stated that the defendants allegedly submitted fraudulent PPP loan applications on behalf of businesses, provided false information on PPP loan applications, and misused proceeds on personal expenses. The announcement notes that suspended borrowers are prohibited from receiving future small business and disaster loans and are not eligible for other SBA programs. The SBA framed the Ohio suspensions as part of a state-by-state effort to identify and take action against borrowers suspected of defrauding pandemic relief loan programs (earlier efforts covered by InfoBytes here).
