SBA sends $22B+ in suspected fraudulent COVID-19 era loans to Treasury for collection
On April 24, the SBA announced that it has referred approximately 562,000 suspected fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) loans totaling $22.2 billion to Treasury for collection, and transmitted the borrower information to DOJ. The referral was coordinated with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud. According to the SBA, the loans had been previously flagged for suspected fraud but had not been referred for collection or investigation. The announcement states that the SBA approved approximately $1.2 trillion in PPP and EIDL loans from 2020 to 2021, of which at least $200 billion is estimated to be fraudulent based on findings from the SBA’s OIG. The SBA noted that by law, it must refer delinquent debts to Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service once they become sufficiently past due and refer cases flagged for potential fraud to the appropriate investigative and law enforcement authorities.
