Fannie Mae announces servicers may proactively solicit borrowers for mortgage insurance termination

September 25, 2026

On September 16, Fannie Mae, at the direction of the FHFA, updated its requirements related to the termination of conventional mortgage insurance, allowing servicers to proactively solicit borrowers who may be eligible for mortgage insurance termination based on the current value of their property. According to the Lender Letter, servicers may now contact borrowers whose mortgage loans are close to, or have reached, the loan-to-value ratio requirements for mortgage insurance termination and notify them of the steps required to terminate coverage, as outlined in Servicing Guide B-8.1-04. The policy change is effective immediately.
