Illinois financial regulator launches streamlined portal for consumer finance complaints
On May 11, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) announced the launch of a new online portal to “simplify and modernize” the process for consumers to file complaints against financial institutions. The new portal consolidates complaints for both the agency’s Division of Banking and Division of Financial Institutions, creating a “unified” submission process for IDFPR-regulated financial institutions. The agency stated the launch responds to a “significant rise” in consumer financial complaints, citing the CFPB’s data showing that complaints to the CFPB more than doubled from 2.7 million in 2024 to 5.6 million in 2025, while the CFPB’s successful mediation rate fell from 49 percent in 2024 to less than 5 percent by November 2025. In Illinois specifically, consumers submitted 244,000 complaints to the CFPB in 2025, an increase of more than 120,000 from the prior year, according to the announcement. The agency said the improved complaint process is intended to enhance the IDFPR’s ability to “identify industry issues, support voluntary mediation, and protect consumers.”
