NCUA seeks comment on enhancing and streamlining credit union data collection

May 1, 2026

On April 21, the NCUA announced that it issued a request for information (RFI) in the Federal Register seeking input on opportunities to “enhance and streamline” its data collections from federally insured credit unions. The RFI covers data collected through three reporting instruments: the 5300 Call Report, the 5310 Corporate Credit Union Call Report, and the Form 4501A Profile. These reports provide the NCUA with information on credit unions’ financial condition, management changes, payment systems, designation status, and other data the agency uses to assess risk and monitor regulatory compliance at the institution and industry levels. The RFI poses ten questions to stakeholders, including credit unions, leagues, trade associations, other regulators, and academics. Among other things, the NCUA asked respondents to identify: (i) specific areas of the reports that are challenging to complete; (ii) the accuracy of compliance burden estimates; (iii) sections that could be made optional for small or non-complex credit unions; (iv) items that should be added or removed from collection; and (v) data that could be collected more efficiently from other sources. The NCUA stated it intends to issue additional RFIs in the future to solicit stakeholder feedback on other data collections and systems. Comments are due by June 23.
