Connecticut provides new laws for seizure and forfeiture of virtual currency and virtual currency wallets

June 27, 2025

On June 23, the governor of Connecticut approved SB 6990 to establish new laws and amend existing ones regarding the seizure and forfeiture of virtual currency and virtual currency wallets in Connecticut. The new law states that “property” now includes virtual currency and virtual currency wallets, along with their contents — even if mixed with other assets. These can be seized and forfeited if they are possessed or used to commit certain crimes, such as larceny. The act goes into effect July 1, 2026.
