Maine amends law to ban medical debt reporting to credit bureaus
June 13, 2025
On June 9, the governor of Maine approved LD 558, which prohibits medical creditors, debt collectors, and debt buyers from reporting consumer medical debt to consumer reporting agencies. The new law replaces previous terminology “medical expenses” with “medical debt” throughout the statute, as well as eliminates provisions that had allowed reporting of medical debts under certain conditions, such as when debts were paid in full or when consumers were making regular payments.
