On May 9, the Office of the Attorney General for Texas announced it reached a $1.375 billion settlement with a tech company for the violation of Texas data privacy laws. The lawsuit alleged unlawful tracking of users’ private data, including geolocation, incognito searches, and biometric data. The settlement followed years of active litigation and a petition for review by the Texas Supreme Court. The deal also marked the largest monetary settlement against the tech company for data-privacy violations at the state level. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton touted the result as a victory in the state’s efforts to protect Texans’ personal data and hold tech companies accountable for their activities.
