Fed announces its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances study

March 7, 2025

On February 28, the Fed announced it would begin its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances to examine the economic well-being of American families. The survey, conducted every three years since 1983, aims to study household finances, including assets, like houses and cars to stocks and bonds, and debts and banking habits. The data will inform monetary policy and contribute to discussions on housing and credit issues.

The Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, will send a letter in mid-March to about 13,000 households, urging participation. An academic research organization will conduct the survey, randomly selecting participants from various U.S. geographic areas. The survey results will be published in late 2026. This initiative follows the 2022 survey, which provided insights into the Covid-19 pandemic’s financial impact on American families.
